Rosenior reviewed before Rooney reunion (written for bcfc.com)

Dugout watch: Hull City

Ahead of Blues' match against Hull City in the Sky Bet Championship, BCFC.com has charted the career of the opposition's Head Coach.

Wayne Rooney’s trip down memory lane continues as the former Derby County manager and his erstwhile colleague Liam Rosenior compete at St. Andrew's on Wednesday 25 October, kick-off 7:45pm. Birmingham City's new boss chose the now Hull chief to be his assistant at Pride Park following his appointment in January 2021, where they oversaw 85 matches together during a tricky period that included administration for the Rams. Rosenior took over as interim manager following Rooney’s departure in June 2022 but was relieved of his duties the following September as Derby moved to employ Paul Warne.

Prior to his spell in Derbyshire, Rosenior spent the 2018/19 season as assistant coach of Brighton & Hove Albion’s Under-23s team, after retiring from playing with the Seagulls. Away from on-field duties, he regularly appeared as a Sky Sports pundit before joining Derby in July 2019 as a first-team specialist to Phillip Cocu.

After leaving the East Midlands outfit, he was appointed Head Coach at Hull last November which saw the Englishman return to the club where he made 161 appearances as a player between 2010 and 2015. Taking over at the Tigers from caretaker manager Andy Dawson, he led them to a 15th-place finish in last year’s Championship standings.

Following a loss in this season’s opener away to Norwich City, the East Yorkshire side went undefeated in eight games, picking up a big win against recently relegated Leicester City along the way, before falling short versus high-flying Ipswich Town at the start of October.

Rosenior's 17-year playing career began at Bristol City where he came through the youth system, scoring in their Football League Trophy final victory over Carlisle United. The defender signed for Fulham in November 2003, making his Premiership debut in a 1-1 draw against Manchester United which saw him earn the Man of the Match award. He spent time on loan at Torquay United later that season before returning to the Cottagers ahead of 2004/05 to become a regular starting full-back. The Englishman earned himself call ups to the Young Lions Under-20s and Under-21s between 2005 and 2007, recording 11 appearances and scoring once for his country.

He joined Reading in 2007, where he spent three years, including a season-long loan at Ipswich Town during that period. He was left without a club after his contract with the Royals expired in the 2010 close season but was picked up by Hull the following October. After initially penning a short-term deal, Rosenior stayed in the North East for five seasons where he arguably enjoyed his best years, helping the club achieve promotion to the Premier League in 2013 as well as reaching the Tigers' first-ever FA Cup final in 2014, which he started at Wembley Stadium.

Rosenior began his coaching badges during his time at the club, undertaking sessions with the Under-21s to complete his UEFA B badge. The son of former player and manager Leroy Rosenior left Hull in 2015 to spend three years at Brighton. He aided the seaside club to Premier League promotion in 2017 before hanging up his boots the following year.
