BCU Men’s Rugby crowned automatic champions after rivals Oxford forfeit title-deciding fixture

The BCU Men’s Rugby team were crowned champions of the Men's Midlands Tier 4A after rivals Oxford failed to attend the match on Wednesday.

The Lions finish the season unbeaten and will now be promoted to the third tier of the BUCS Men's Midlands league.

President of the Men's Rugby Society Jacob Ruprecht, said: “It’s massive. It’s absolutely huge.

"I’ve played BCU rugby for three years and we haven’t won many games but this year we’ve been absolutely massive and the team has become very cohesive - we've worked together really well.

“Personally, I’m very proud. After I took over from George Munro [previous president] who was massive for the club last year, I’ve been able to take his legacy one step further.

"I take great pride as president in us winning the league this year.”

The Blues have profited from an array of third year talent with big leaders and characters graduating from Birmingham City University this summer, however Ruprecht believes their absence will not inhibit the team’s success next season.

“We’ve got so many characters in the second year and a few of the freshers coming through are really showing that they’re part of the team and ready to step up and take leadership roles.

“Players like [Jack] Bull and [David] Trembath are going to be massive next year — Danny [Ronald] as well.

"We’ve got some great players to step up and take the places of the third years.”

Captain of the team Callum Nichols added: “It means the absolute world. When I came to BCU I had one goal and it was to win the league, now I’ve done it.

“It’s just an honour. I can’t describe it — I love them all.”

Vice-captain Danny Ronald looks set to take over the captaincy after Nichols leaves the society at the end of this season.

“Danny and I have a great relationship - I back him all the way.

"I can’t fault Danny, what a leader. He deserves to take that captaincy and he’s going to prove me right.

"This teams going up another league — I’m telling you now."

The skipper believes the team can lift more silverware this season with a cup semi-final against a familiar opponent in Nottingham Trent.

“I have faith in this team. With our current form I can’t see us slipping up.

"We’ve beaten [Nottingham] Trent once already this season. It was hard game but I have no doubts we can go there again and get the result we need.”

The cup semi-final fixture takes place in Nottingham on Wednesday before the final the following week where the victor will face Moulton Men’s first team.
